The Value of a CD

So I'm a DJ. I have a lot of CD's. I take good care of my CD's. You'd think they would be worth a reasonable amount for trade-in. I found that to be an incorrect assumption.

I had an interesting experience at Graywhale Entertainment today. I recently organized my CD collection and took out ones that I don't want/need anymore. I called Graywhale to find out the average amount they give for used CD's. The employee politely informed me that it depends on the CD and it can range from 5 cents to $8. I decided it was definitely worth a shot, especially due to the popularity of the CD's I was giving up. So I drive down there and walk in with a shoebox full of 51 CD's. The employee tells me it will take her awhile to inspect the discs and determine the value. So I browse around the store for about 30 minutes. I'm enjoying my exploration of their inventory when the employee calls me over and says, "Alright I'm done, it looks like we can give you $28 for your CD's." My jaw honestly dropped in shock. I asked her if she was serious and she looked at me like duh are you stupid? She then explained to me that almost all of my CD's would have to be resurfaced and that they had a large amount of those titles already on hand, that's why the trade-in value was so low. I found this ridiculous because the CD's are in great, working condition and I had just browsed through their entire used inventory and found maybe 4 or 5 duplicates of CD's I brought. I told her no way, packed up my CD's and I was out of there.

Back in the good old days you could take a used CD to Wherehouse Music and they would easily give you $4 for an average CD. It's amazing to me how the value of a CD has completely disappeared. It makes me sad. The internet has taken over the industry. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the ability to get on iTunes and buy a great song from a horrible album for 99 cents but it's got to the point where that's all people do. What happened to desiring the actual physical CD? The experience of struggling to remove the wrapping, gently putting the disc in your car CD player and jamming out to your new purchase while looking through the album artwork and credits is priceless to me! Does anyone do that anymore? It's the ONLY way I do it. I thrive on seeing the hard work the artist put into the project and the uniqueness of every CD. When artists record an album they have a vision of their work. They have images, thoughts, ideas that inspired their songs and they want to share that with their fans. This is what I get out of the physical CD. It's how the artist expresses their love for their work.

I miss those days when I wasn't the only one. I always have and always will support the CD industry. Hopefully the digital option will NEVER be the only option.

High school. You either loved it or hated it. After DJ-ing at a high school for the first time with me not attending high school, it got me thinking. Regardless if you liked it or not, you walk away with a connection to your school. You will always feel like a part of it. Recently, I've caught myself digging through the Clipper to see if my high school football team won. It's almost like an obligation, I feel I have to know how my school is doing. It just seems natural. You're part of a family, a very large family, who have all occupied that school at a certain point in time and left our own unique marks. When you go back, you feel like you're...home.

We kicked off the 2006-07 school year with a bang...that would classify as a double-booking in PowerPlay terms. Brett was in Provo, while I was welcoming back Northridge. Although they lost their game to Viewmont, the Knights stomped their hearts out.

The energy was amazing. It was about 300 degrees in the foyer (that's French for furnace), everyone was wearing glow sticks, and the place was packed front to back. Sadly, the stomp had to be cut short because of the game. I cruised through as many hits as I could and by the end of the night everyone was dripping in sweat...short, but sweet.

'06 Represent

There is no way I could express how much we love working with Northridge. Their student body definitely know how to party, especially the seniors. There was no doubt they were going to make the best of their last high school dance.

The night started off with dinner and the senior video at precisely 7:33, then it was time to report to the dancefloor and get the party started. Scott and Ashley, who were helping me out, deserve the best dancers award by far.

When it came close to the end, I took a survey to see who wanted to end with a slow song or a fast one. Fast clearly won, but Pam quickly corrected me that we would be ending with a reminiscing song. What could be more fitting than "Graduation" by Vitamin C? The crowd loved the choice and they all formed a giant circle while hugging and swaying side to side.

Then when the song ended they all rushed to the center and jumped up and down yelling "06 06 06!"

PowerPlay Productions will be a Gold sponsor for this year's Wasatch Back Relay June 23-24.

The WBR, now in its third year, is a crazy 170 mile relay race from Logan to Park City. Teams of 12 each run, run, and keep running for 24 straight hours. They start Friday morning and end sometime Saturday. Along the route there's music, stuff to buy, vans, reporters and runners- and hopefully some bears or other assorted wildlife. In fact, maybe the coolest part is that you don't have to run in it to have fun. You can head up to Park City on Saturday and spend the day shopping, eating, and partying at the finish line, it's a cool environment.

Last year we provided sound at the finish line for The Grey Effect and Dave Peery. This year, we'll be in Paradise (the city), Huntsville, and Heber providing about 20 hours of sound for The Puddle Mountain Ramblers, The Grey Effect, and possibly Quickdraw.

Tri Delta "Delight"

November 12, 2005 was a monumental day for us at PowerPlay. With two gigs in one night, you might say we killed 2 birds with 1 stone. Brett was on the wheels at a stake dance in South Jordan, while I was spinnin' in Park City at the Tri Delta formal.

I think Brett has mentioned we love sororities, and Tri Delta only increased my love. Mike Vandivere helped me out at the Park City Marriott and we had a great time with the sorority. They were all in the P-A-R-T-Y mood. The girls didn't even want to eat, they were all beggin' me to play dance music during dinner. Let's just say dinner was short and sweet.

The dance was crazy--these girls were going to have a great time no matter what I played. The crowd was definitely favoring hip-hop, but the night's biggest hit by far was the sorority's usual request for "Dixieland Delight." They were singing along and dancing in unison. It was a "delight" to watch. The CDX was givin' me a few problems, but overall the dance went great. We have to thank Miranda for all that she does and we look forward to working with her in the future.

A Warm Wedding

If you want to have your wedding in a secluded, beautiful setting, you might choose Sundance. Just a word of caution though- placing candles in pots full of arts-and-crafty dried moss stuff looks beautiful... but it's also highly flammable. Then again, we were lucky enough to get to stomp out two of them, and it was pretty fun. Just another way to add some excitement to the reception.

Sundance was beautiful and all the guests were very impressed. The place looked great, everyone did an excellent job of creating a first class reception, and the music was perfect...even if we do say so ourselves. Thanks for having us.

Congratulations and good luck Brett and G.P., we're sure you'll enjoy years of happieness.

The Fabulous Flowells visit Utah

The Fabulous Flowells in Provo

The Faulous Flowells formed in 2000, performing in and around Las Vegas, NV. The first Flowapalooza took place in March 2001. The Flowells continued to play shows and gained wide local popularity. 2001 also birthed the Flowells first full lenth album, "Germainious Habitat".

The album recieved critical acclaim by Pope John Paul II, saying "Never have I heard such beauty put to music." Other celebrities joined in heaping accalades on the album as well. "They saved my career," said Bob Sagat of "America's Funniest Home Videos" and the successful TV series "Full House."

In the following years, each of the Flowells went in different directions:

JC 2 Smoof disappeared in September of 2001, creating a rift in the group as well as conspiracy theories, speculations of hermitism, and unsubstantiated claims of sightings among the fanbase.

DJ Push Play always had a dream of sailing. He bought a catamaran and lived by himself on the ocean. Little is known of his adventures.

MC Phetus Brown became an avid gardener and even got his own show on HGTV. He competed in the 2003 HGTV Amateur Garden Olympics, and won 3 gold medals. In 2004, he hosted them.

Herrmann kept to the streets. He moved to Mexico and joined a gang known as "Las Ardillas". They were responsible for 50% of the crime in Mexico. He has since moved back to the US and bought a horse.

Pickel lived a peaceful life at his ranch in Canada. At a family reunion in 2004, his grandmother (who is featured on Germaineous Habitat) began hastling Pickel for royalties. A knife fight broke out and Pickel lost to his grandma, recieving various puncture wounds. Her lawyers accused Pickel of terrorizing the elderly and Pickel was in prison for 11 months and has been released.

The Fabulous Flowells have since reunited. October 21st, the group made the trip from Vegas to Provo for an all-out production, and a night we're guessing won't be forgotten in a long time by anyone lucky enough to have been in the audience.

PowerPlay supplied the sound for what was probably one of the most unique acts ever to hit the town, and we were proud to be a part of The Fabulous Flowells' Reunion Tour.

If the blog updates have been sparse, it's b'cause our time to rest has been the same. Last week was almost too busy to blog about, and this week's looking about the same. But even with the KSL Tailgates, the Daddy-Daughter Dance, and the Cougar Countdown Show, we found time for one of our favorite events of the week. On Tuesday, Richter7 (Utah's leading advertising agency) launched "OndaR7" (their Hispanic Marketing Division) with a "Friends and Press" event at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center on Broadway in Salt Lake City. We were fortunate enough to provide stage managing for the event, including a Flamenco group and a pretty impressive latin dancer (as seen in the pictures above).

It was a great event with notable attendees including folks from the Govenor's Office, SL County Mayor Corroon, Chris Redgrave, Park City Chamber and Visitors Bureau, Zions Bank executives, and on and on. I learned how to eat a tamale (taking it out of the corn husk makes it easier to chew and digest), and got to drive around town with a pick-up truck full of piñatas, the latter being one of my life-long dreams.

Our favotite part of the event? When funkmaster "Capitan J" layed down some Paul Oakenfold tracks. Fat, punchy bass after an afternoon of mandolins, box drums and classical guitars is like water after a mouthfull of sand...or cat hair.

N-Ridge Homecoming '05 Playlist

Northridge High!! We love DJ-ing for this school! Last time, at senior cotillion, there was a "banana man" that was supporting Gwen's "Hollaback Girl." So we never know what to expect from N-Ridge. This time around we were kind of worried though. The dance didn't really pick up until about 10:00. We think the Priesthood session had something to do with it, but when the crowd finally arrived we had a bumpin' dance goin down! They were crazy! The crowd was really into the up-tempo techno/pop songs, like "Heaven" by DJ Sammy. It was sweet because they were singing along (almost louder than the speakers) and we could tell they were having a good time. We always enjoy working with Northridge High, and we're looking forward to Senior Cotillion in May.

I love hypothetical situations. Let us describe one for you...

It's 7 on a Saturday night. You're a senior at a 5A school, one of the largest in the Beehive State with 2,100 enrolled students.

You're excited for your school's homecoming 'cause the boy you used to punch in grade school, the one you wrote notes to in middle school (with those check boxes to see if he liked you "more than a friend"), and the same boy you've been going to the football games with this year finally asked you to the dance-- Saturday, at 7.

You all spent too much money on your dresses and too much time on your hair, but Homecoming only comes once when you're a senior. Besides, Hank was nice enough to spend too much on the salad and ice-water you had for dinner, and he spent way too much on the flowers that are wilting around your wrist.

So...everything's pretty much perfect. But it's quiet. And while you can talk and laugh and suck on your hair (flavored hairspray, maybe), you'd rather dance. Problem is, the DJ hasn't shown up. And it's hard to suck on your hair and dance at the same time when there's no beat.

It's 7:15 p.m. and PowerPlay gets a call. Of course we're happy to bail you out.

In fact, it's something we've done quite a bit in the past few years- not just for school dances, but for weddings too. Saving that extra hundred bucks or so by hiring the kid using a couple kickin' car stereo speakers for sound, and a couple flashlights for sweet effects suddenly doesn't seem like such a good deal. All the planning in the world doesn't do much if you don't hire a capable company to provide the most important services of the night.

Save yourself the agony of a date where you actually have to talk with a guy you don't much like. We promise the music will be loud enough you won't have to talk at all. And if, for some reason, you don't hire PowerPlay- at least have your DJ sign a contract. Then, if you still get stood up, feel free to give us a call-- we're always happy to help.

Hunter High was about an hour drive away, but the decision to hire PowerPlay to rescue the dance didn't just save their homecoming--the subsequent decision to contract their remaining dances to PowerPlay will be saving the rest of their '05-'06 school year.

Thank you for letting us help, Hunter. We're excited to work with you this year.

KSL Hires PowerPlay Productions

KSL has hired PowerPlay Productions to assist in producing the KSL/BYU Football Tailgate Parties to be held across Utah Valley the day before each of 6 Cougar home games this Fall. The first is scheduled to take place Friday September 2, before the Cougars take on Boston College in their season opener. The party will be held at Macey's in Provo- the event is free, and will include various activities along with some good (probably loud) music.

From a Castle on The Hill

I didn't know anything like it existed in Salt Lake, but Friday we made a trip to scout out where we would be performing for the Drake-Stewart wedding. Through the wrought iron fence and down the winding driveway was a castle belonging to the SLC Executive Director of Community and Economic Development. The place was incredible, with a view to match.

Music selection for this one was pretty original-- a mixture of Jack Johnson, Donovan Frankenreiter, G. Love, Wayne Wonder, Sean Paul, Outkast, Luther Vandross and others, which suprisingly all meshed together really well. The wedding and reception were gret- celebrity attendees included the likes of Dave Newbold of Richter7, and Joe "Joey" Britton. Joey even took over the controls long enough to throw down some Elliot Smith and Flaming Lips.

As the reception ended, fireworks exploded over the city with the perfect view- from a castle on the hill. Congrats to Holly and Travis, you guys rock.

Other News- The Howie Day and Anna Nalick concert at the Capitol Theater on Thursday was pretty good. If you're looking for some new music, check out Missy Higgins. She's a mellow Aussie that made for an impressive opening act for the concert.

Pirates and Weddings

I met a pirate on Friday. Seriously, I promise he was a pirate. KSL was broadcasting the Movie Show from Jordan Commons Megaplex at our premier screening of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." This guy wearing everything pirate (except for an eye patch) comes up to me and starts asking questions about chocolate fountains and Charlie and I don't know what else because all I can think about is "Hey, this guy is a pirate."

But he wasn't just any pirate--he was an oddly familiar pirate, and I don't know many. It wasn't until later in the day that I realized he was the one from Pirates of the Carribean that had the eye that kept popping out. So I'm not sure why he was at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Maybe it had something to do with the golden ticket.

OK, we don't blog much about weddings...but weddings are sorta our focus during the summer, so if we're gunna blog...

All of a sudden we're doing a bunch of weddings at Eldridge Manor on 4th North in Bountiful. It openend after remodeling in January and has apparently become a pretty popular venue for weddings and receptions. Lastnight it was 102 degrees, and the dancing was outside. We should have played Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash or something, but despite the heat, the event went great. Congratulations Wendy and Jeff. If you could make it through dancing in a dress and tux in that heat, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to make it throught anything.

Party @ The Blaser's

You know an event was off-the-hook when you hear people saying "It was like one of those parties you see in the movies: it was at a way nice house, there was a sweet pool, a bumpin' DJ, and tons of food." That's exactly what Bridget Blaser's 18th birthday party was.

It started out kind of slow, everyone was swimming up top. But when "Tootsee Roll" came on it picked up, because everyone decided to turn the party into a stomp. Before I knew it, I had the whole crowd in front of me and ready to dance. The crowd would only tolerate hip-hop, as you can tell from the playlist, and they were dancing the entire time. We would have rocked all night long, but around 11:30 we had neighbors calling and complaining so we had to turn the music off. Luckily we got out of there before the sprinklers turned on.

Wasatch Back Relay

Hey Everybody! It's been a while, but that's 'cause it's been a crazy summer. And now we're gearing up for the Wasatch Back Relay.

"What's the WBR," you ask? Well, not only is it one of the coolest events of the summer, but listen to this: It's a crazy 170 mile foot race from Logan to Park City to be ran in 24 hours! Teams of 12 runners each run and run and keep running. They started this morning (Friday) and will end sometime tomorrow (Saturday). Along the way there's music, stuff to buy, and other cool stuff like vans and reporters and runners and probably some snacks. Anyway, check out www.wasatchbackrelay.com for more info on the race--it's getting national attention and drawing runners from all over the country- and this is only it's second year. A very cool event.

In fact, maybe the coolest part is that you don't have to run in it to have fun. Come up to City Park in Park City (it's cooler up there) on Saturday and spend the day shopping, eating, and joining us at the finish line. The Grey Effect will be performing along with Dave Peery and we'll be doing the sound for 'em.

In fact, if you come see us at the sound booth, I've got a pair of tickets to The Flying Ace All-Stars Freestyle Big Air Show at Utah Olympic Park. Oh- and they're Pool Deck VIP passes. We'll be at the finish line from 6AM 'till 6PM, and the tickets will be first-come, first-serve.

The first runners should cross the finish line around 8am (keep in mind they started running on Friday), and the last around 5pm- Award ceremony will be at 6pm. Come say "Hi" if you make it up there!

We might even do an audio blog while we're running the board, so if you can't make it up to Park City, you might get to hear some of the music anyway- check back and we'll let you know.

Bravestock '05 and Country Weddins

When you combine the end of the school year with about 500 high school students, an outdoor stomp, and a couple of the best DJs in the Intermountain West, you pretty much get one of the highest-energy dances of the year-- and some ringing ears for the residents in the surrounding area. It was a beautiful sight. And sound.

Granted, it started out a little slow- it was still light when the dance started at 8. But once the sun went down, you couldn't keep a lid on the dance floor, (asphalt, parking lot...whatever you wanna call it) the rest of the night. I actually saw one guy trying to keep a lid on it, and it just didn't happen. I think he may have even suffered some minor injuries as a result. He got a goiter. And a newt. Very embarassing for all involved.

Nate posted the playlist down low, and I've finally gotten around to a few pictures and a blog entry. We really appreciate all of the support from the students all year and especially at their last stomp of the year. It was great to hear your compliments--and we hope the summer treats you as well as a fisherman treats his bait...or maybe as well as he'd treat his fishing rod or net or something. And as always, a big thank you to Amy Jones who's always supported us, and who's been an incredible asset to not only the student government, but also to the student body at BHS.

To round it all out we had two great weddings this week. A generous tip on the first, and a lucky garter at the second. Only time will tell which of those benifits is worth more.

Congratulations to Mark and Jaymie, and to McKenzie and Joe. We're real proud of you guys for loving someone and sticking to them...even if they are country music fans : ) Seriously though, we played over eight hours of pure country tunes for those weddings, just going to show you that we can make any event a PowerPlay event- that's right- even with country music involved. Some of you might know country tunes haven't always been our forte (pardon my French), but it was obvious from the folks at both of those weddings, the background and dancing at the receptions could not have gone better if Dolly had made an appearance herself. Those cowboys sure love to dance.

And no, we didn't play any Dolly Parton...but we did have a moment of silence just to show our respect for her and her courage (or misjudgement) to actually star in the movie "Straight Talk" back in '92. What a woman.

Things have been crazy lately. Check out pics from one of our dances last week. This is Northridge High School's Senior Cotillion. It's the first time we've been forced to make a decision on whether or not we should allow a banana to crowd surf. Since it was durring "Holla Back Girl," we figured we'd better let the giant banana do as he please. And now, thanks to Gwen, N8DZ knows exactly how to spell B-A-N-A-N-A-S. So that's...encouraging. Thanks N-ridge, the dance rocked all night long. Nice way to end your year.

Wednesday we provided sound and background music for the v|Spring Capital v|100 Banquet, where Governor John Huntsman Jr. spoke to a crowd of about 200 of Utah's top entrepreneurs. While we weren't included in the actuall v|100, we were there with the best...so that's gotta count for something. And you know you've made it big when you're at an event serving all you can eat sushi. And we made sure the deserts weren't poisoned. Several times. So thanks to Aaron, Dennis, and everyone else at v|Spring, we had a great time.

Dizzle cruzin' in style to the g-i-g. And our punk rock billboard.

Smooth no-brainer dance Saturday night. It was somewhere in Utah, but even now, I'm not really sure what city we were in. I just wanted to make one interesting note: This was the first time I've ever heard of a "survey" in which teenage respondants said the bass should be turned down a bit. But hey, if you're cutting the check, we'll cut the bass. Not a problem.

The dance went well though. There was a bit of break dancing, a short-lived DDR contest, and whole lot of "old stand-by's" that kept the floor moving from start to finish.

And I've gotta say, I love customer appreciation days at Wendy's. Free frosties. And among the hustle and bustle of the hair nets and heat lamps, if your order gets messed up...they more than compensate you for your time. Thanks Dave.

The Good, The Bad - Prom

This prom sort of had mixed results if you ask me.

It started off good, a lot of people showed up for dinner which is great for us 'cause play good music all night and don't have to wait for the crowd to show up. Then some bad news came to us, 30+ people had to get their pictures retaken because of the rain at Memory Grove. (On that note, it's pointless to read the names over the mic...everyone comes up and double checks anyways.)

Next good thing was the senior video they showed. This was very well done for a student. I'm glad to hear it's not finished though because it was definetely missing things from the year. As soon as that was over, we started with Eminem demanding "Now everyone report to the dance floor" and pretty much everyone obeyed Mr. Slim Shady. It started out great, you could tell everyone had a ton of energy. I was very pleased with how things were going until "The Battle Of The Lights" came into play. Whenever we do Bountiful events it seems someone always turns the lights on and ruins the show. The score...BHS 38 PowerPlay 0. I'm not sure why they turn the lights on, maybe because they're afraid of the dark. Not only did they have to turn some lights on, but they had to be spotlights on the DJ. So Brett and I felt like we were on display all night.

More interesting news...There was a gay couple at the dance. Yep, turns out it attracts a lot of attention too, because reporters were following the couple all night. (Link to Deseret News Report) But the dance goes on. Just as we start gaining momentum from people crowd surfing off the stage and the crowd completely rocking out, ALL the lights turn on and people are like "is it over??" Brett and I were just as confused. Once again we had to battle with the lights and this one was a complete loss. Brett tried to scramble and tell them it wasn't over for another half hour but it was no use, dance over-unexpectedly. It was like being shut down on a date. You get all this excitement and momentum built up but then you get shut down. Worst feeling ever. I wasn't the only one mad about this, the crowd was pretty furious and of course blamed the DJ "you didn't tell us it was the last song, I didn't get to dance with my date for the last song!" etc. People started filing out, and that was it.

So as you can see the dance swung back and forth all night. At the moment I was pretty disappointed with the outcome, but now when I look back I think it was a pretty kick butt prom. I just wish we had better communication with that "someone."

BHS Prom '05

You know a dance went well when there are hundreds of people packing the floor all night long, jumping up and down and the floors in the hotel are bouncing. With all the excitement, the students at the dance across the hall emptied out of their banquet room into ours, and the party got even bigger. It was a pretty impressive sight.

But it's a whole nother thing when the people are sending you flowers, chocolates, and small pets (puppies, parakeets, cats, and a used badger. We gave the cat back.) after the party. To be honest, we didn't get many animals, but a few students did send us text messages to thank us for the great dance. Still not sure how they got our cell numbers...and that's a little creepy.

Anyway, we thought for a few minutes the stage we were on would collapse with everyone jumping on it. And off it. But it held up pretty well, and the night ended with a packed dance floor.

In other news, we should wish a happy 83rd birthday to last Friday. When I was in there at the Triad Center for the b-day party, they were showing one of the only HD radios in the state (plus there was cake, pizza and drinks). It's a pretty cool stereo, and should make AM sound like FM, and FM sound like CD. KSL will be broadcasting in HD by the end of May. And finally, after months of waiting, Weezer's new album "Make Believe" hit store shelves thismorning. Scott called with a quick review thismorning, and I'll be picking it up as soon as I can put away this keyboard.

Have I mentioned how I love sororities? I think N8 does too. But what I think I love even more are freight elevators. The U of U Tri Delta Formal was at the Downtown Hilton which was probably designed by George Lucas or some other Star Wars geek. The place was complete with people speaking Eewok (define: ewok) or any other language besides english, and there was a secret elevator with doors that open up and down instead of sideways. The doors were of course, hydraulic, and hidden behind the walls of the hotel.

After loading nearly everything from the trailer to the banquet room where dinner would be served and a dance would follow, we had only one piece of equipment left- the lighting truss. And it didn't fit in the elevator we'd been using. That's where DJ Eagle Eyes (N8DZ) came to the rescue when he spied a secret, enormous elevator right at the edge of the loading dock where we were parked. It looked like this:

But I couldn't see it until N8 pointed it out. I must have forgotten my spectacles back at home. So thanks N8, you saved us about an hour of takedown time because we didn't have to wind through all the yapping Ewoks in the kitchen on the way out.

They're cute little suckers though, eh?

East HS Prom

East's dances are always some of the best- they've got a ton of energy, and they like good music. Just take a look at some of the crazy songs on the playlist N8 posted yesterday--and the place was packed.

Anyway, like I said, we were in The Gateway Depot. It's a pretty dope place unless you consider the acoustics...like the Sistine Chapel: beautiful, spacious...and beautiful. The problem is that when the Vienna Boy's Choir sings, they're usually doing it in Latin, and nobody understands a word of it-even with the echo. That's all great unless you want to understand anything you're hearing, in which case, the Sistine Chapel and The Depot are about the worst places on their respective continents to listen to any sort of amplified music.

Despite the acoustics, though, the dance basically rocked. After about 9, the room was packed which helped out the sound. You get a bunch of bodies in there, and it takes out a little bit of the echo. At about song 21 below, the floor caught fire and the place was burning up the rest of the night.

We had a visit from fellow DJ James G, who even shared some of the licorice he'd just bought at Virgin next door. So, thanks James, a shout out to Alicia and Emily from East, and as always- N8DZ tore it up.

As far as the bloody knuckles update goes, I was the one with 'em tonight.

Weezer's Free Concert

Brittney's pregnant, Foxy Brown's crazy, Johnnie Johnson died, Michael's going to jail (soon), and 50 Cent is going to get shot...again (cause when gangstas start writing music about eachother, someone always gets shot. Read here if you want.) My guess is that Jadakiss will be the one to do it...Fat Joe is just too nice.

But, the exciting news is that not only does Weezer come out with their new album "Make Believe" on May 10th, but they're playing a FREE concert in Vegas July 2nd. Since PowerPlay loves you, we've decided to let you in on how to get your free tickets...even though it will make it harder for us to get our own. Here's what you gotta do: Go here Monday April 18th, and request your tickets. There will be 50,000 given away with a limit of 4 per person. Early AMs, Late PMs, Odds & Ends

Sorry for the less-than-frequent updates lately, things have been crazy. I'm better at spending my time listening to music than building web pages I guess. And yes, I'm still trying to convince myself I'm no longer the geek I was in high school...

Anyway, yesterday was killer. I'm used to burning the midnight gasoline, working 'till the early hours of the morn', and then I usually get to sleep in. But, I also work for KSL NewsRadio 1160, and those hours throw my whole clock off. Yesterday we were broadcasting Doug Wright and The Movie Show from 9 to 12, so I had to be at work at 7am. 7am!!!

The way I see it, the only things supposed to be up at that hour in the morning are birds (which should keep their tweeting to themselves 'till at least...8 or 9), and fishermen. I'm not a bird, and I wasn't fishing, so I felt a little out of my element at that time of the day. Add daylight savings time to that, and I was up at like...4:30am. Way too early. I did enjoy the groggy drive to SLC though, and The Movie Show was pretty funny yesterday.

After that was all wrapped up, I made my way back down to P-Town for the Battle of the Bands that rocked pretty much all night long. Declaration, Clearance, and John Cory took the cake.

Speaking of Battles of the Bands, did I ever tell you about the one we judged at Bountiful High? Here's the update: The band we picked to win the school-wide B.O.t.B, Ipswich, ended up winning the Statewide Battle of the Bands. So...I guess that means we pretty much know everything...or that Ipswich is just flat out a good band. Probably the latter...anyway, congratulations - you guys rock(ed).

Feel Your Music

I remember the first time I really felt music.

Sitting in the back of my friend's red Jeep Wrangler, the sun was bright and warm. He started up the engine, even though he barely knew how to drive a standard transmission, and flipped on the CD player. Back then, having a CD player was quite the statement. Most cars still only had radios and tape decks. Some had CD players, and even fewer had a full-fledged sound system including subwoofers. Yes, I'm trying to sound like my grandpa here. Back when I was a kid...

Anyway, when he put Green Day in the deck and pushed up the volume, I was pretty impressed that instead of listening to the music, I was feeling it. The music was basically shooting through my innards, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Well, the coolest thing ever next to Scott's Marithe & Francois Girbaud jean overalls and braided leather belt with the classic "loop and swish."

I'm sure you know how it feels. Every note the bass player hits, and each kick of the drums, it's like having a string tied around the guts just behind your xiphoid process (xiphoid process: that little dangling bone thing at the bottom of your sternum; homologous to the uvula: the little dangling thing at the back of your throat), and every time those notes blast out of the speakers, somebody yanks that string and your entrails rumble in delight.

Since then, I've felt my music over and over, and I've felt it more intense-- but each time, the feeling is the same. And that feeling is part of what we're trying to accomplish at PowerPlay Productions. Because whether you're planning a school dance, outdoor movie, or you need sound reinforcement for your band, when your insides are dancing, it makes it just that much easier for your outsides to dance as well.

N8 Dizzle on the turntizzles [CDJ800 / CDX]

Well, what can I say? Another fine production. Dizzle has posted the playlist below--you'll notice some original tracks such as "Nothing Else Matters" from Metallica, "You Got Me All Wrong" from Dios Malos off Music From The OC, and "Karma (Karmastition)" from Alicia Keys, early on in the night. The turn out came pretty late...about 9:30 or so until the floor was packed, so we threw in some "back shelf tunes" for the select few.

I think the big news of the night came as we were loading the last case...I think it was the amp rack into the trailer. Up until now, we'd avoided any bodily injury. Obviously, a PowerPlay production is not a PowerPlay production without a little blood. So, leave it to DJ HERO (N8 Dizzle) to save the night. He hooked us up with his signature bloody knuckle routine, we locked the doors, and called it a night.

Wait...with about a half mile left to go to N8's place, we ran out of gas. Luckily we were able to milk the tank enough to flip around and get down to a gas station. Props to the city planners who made sure the gas stations would be located at the bottom of 1800 S. instead of the top of the hill. But did you know almost every gas station in Bountiful closes when the Bunkers turn off their lights (between 6 and 6:30pm depending on how the kids are behaving)? We had to almost-coast probably five or so miles, passing three dark gas stations before we could finally pump gasoline back into the thirsty bowels of the Tacoma. Speaking of gasoline...if the price goes up much more, I'm going to be forced to start mixing it with water like my grandpa does with his katchup.

Oh, and still speaking of gasoline, you know that Gasolina song? N8 does have it...but are you sure you really want to hear it? I mean, we could just poke our eyes out instead, and I think we'd all be happier. But hey, you're the boss. Request what you want.

The Otters - My Favorite Sea Creature/Band

I like weekends. Especially weekends where I get to spend time listening to loud music. We didn't have any gigs Friday, so I went to a party in the KMB...it was a benifit for kids in Honduras and Guatemala who have been affected by the recent tsunami. Just kidding about the tsunami.

Anyway, the party was pretty cool. DJ Lolli(sp?) (this is a male DJ, despite the name) of Alpha Productions was spinning the tunes. I don't normally talk about other companies because I'm obviously biased...but I have to make an exception here. I thought he did a great job- relatively few hiccups on the back nine, and my only real complaint would be that he played "Switch," Will Smith's new one N8 warned us about, twice. I'm a big fan of the song, just not the repeat, but hey...he's the one behind the booth.

So Friday was good, but really just a warm-up for Saturday when we did sound for The Otters' concert. Sound reinforcement is one of my favorite gigs, and doing SR for The Otters made it that much sweeter. Really, this had to be one of the best concerts in the history of mankind. I know, I know- you're probably all saying that same thing about the last Hilary Lohan or Lindsey Duff joint, but I'm telling you- hard rock has never sounded sweeter.

We put out table lamps in the corners of the place, and The Otters played on a stage covered in orange shagg carpet like the kind The Osmonds would probably have in their house. It was beautiful, the lighting was perfect and the whole set looked like a quaint living room in Idaho. Minus the framed crochet and stitchings hanging on the walls.

The sound was tight. All their songs were pretty much perfect--and their finale (TNT) blew the walls off the place. Everyone was jumping around, and our ears were numb, and everyone was shouting along and then exactly when TNT ends, the lead singer and guitar player jump off the stage into the crowd and were carried like heros, kings, or just vagabonds, around the room.

It was a pretty incredible night. Stepping outside and hearing the walls and the glass in the windows rattling from the preassure built up in that place was pretty cool, too. So, like I said- this was one of the best concerts in the history of man, and I think a lot of it might have been thanks to that orange shagg carpet. And the sound system, of course.

B-Town Dances

Before I discuss the gigs we had this weekend, let me give a compliment to Brett....the funniest person in the whole world. You gotta be brilliant to think up "Cassadizzlenova" and that's what Brett is, BRILLIANT. Thanks for making me giggle like a little girl.

MUELLER PARK/MILLCREEK VALENTINE'S DANCE----Ahhh, good old Mueller Park! I'm proud to say I'm a graduate of MPJ and boy going back was a trip down memory lane. The dance was pretty awesome. The officers put up some classic decorations and the turn out was good for just a 9th grade dance. We had some great requests, nothing for songs that belong in elementary. The dance surprisingly went for two hours, due to their good behavior. I gotta say that there are some under age hotties in Jr. High...Brett couldn't focus at all!

BOUNTIFUL HIGH'S JR. PROM----Ahhh, good old Bountiful! Yes, it's true I transferred to Woods Cross but I still got love for my Braves. Once again Jr. Prom was held at the Salt Lake Library. I've heard that people don't like the location and to tell the truth neither does the DJ. It's a weird shaped area, has weak elevators, and the high ceilings kill our quality of sound. Word of advice to BHS...Rice Eccles is the coolest place in the state to have a dance, take advantage of it. Anyways...the dance was off the hook! We had a huge turn out and some awesome requests. Brett and I brought out all the techniques and threw a sweet party! The dance floor was packed the entire night. Set up and take down went extra smooth. Gotta give thanks to "Downtown Taylor Brown" for helping PowerPlay out. (Don't ever touch the record again!!) Amazingly, I did not draw blood this time. Either my skin is really sensitive or Brett needs to get a new light truss...I think it's a little bit of both. I was very pleased with the response we got from the crowd, a lot of people made sure they let us know that they had a great time. I even had some of the officers say it was the best dance of the year! Unfortunately, the girls weren't lining up for me. They were all askin for BC's digits, Brett is such a playa! Gotta give thanks to Amy Jones, she always takes care of PowerPlay.

Just a quick interesting fact...Mr. Will Smith is back!! Yes, The Fresh Prince has returned to the game. His new single "Switch" should be hitting your radios this week, so check for it. I think it's an alright track..we'll see what happens with it. PEACE!

Bountiful, Millcreek/Mueller Park

BHS Jr. Prom at The Salt Lake City Library 2.12.05

You know how sometimes, to describe how busy someone is, people will say somthing like "it was raining cats and dogs," "good heavens," "there're plenty of fish in the sea," or "man was I busy?" I just say holy smokes.

Last weekend was like taking a bunch of holy smokes and mashing 'em all into a heap. Friday morning, Bountiful High held two Battle of the Bands and asked us to be on the judging pannel. I guess the fact that we listen to music on a regular business qualified us for the job. I don't know, but we were on the pannel with a guy who won a Grammy for writing a song Luther Vandross sung (and you thought he wrote his own stuff), and a lady who apparently plays the flute and dances...although it wasn't clear whether she performs those talents in unison. If she does, I'd be willing to bet the better part of a dollar that she commands a standing ovation each time she displays such a feat.

Anyway, I liked all the bands...reminded me of the good old days when The Flying Monkeys of Oz would perform what was supposed to be a Goldfinger song but ended up something completely origional. After the first line we'd either blown a fuse or just forgotten that most songs usually require playing more than one chord over and over on the bass guitar. We probably could have used more practice.

So "Ipswitch" took First Prize honors which included recording time in a local studio...and a candy bar. In fact, rumor has it that everyone in the band may have recieved their own candy bar. In addition to the candy bar, they'll be representing BHS in the Statewide Battle of the Bands. Maybe they'll get Donnie and Marie or Roseanne to judge that one. Can't you just picture Roseanne Barr playing the flute while dancing in knee-highs? Talk about a crowd pleaser...

I'm sure everyone in the audience knew Ipswitch was going to win- after all, the lead singer was wearing cut-off Levi's. Those things make a band. It was quite the production, and I had a good time- expecially b'cause they let me use a clipboard to record my scores. You know the only thing more powerful than a clipboard is a walkie-talkie or a stun gun, right?

After finishing judging, it was off to Mueller Park to dj a killer V-Day dance. I was actually impressed with some of the requests- we even had one for Flogging Molly which is especially fitting for V-Day 'cause of the bagpipes and fiddles. I bet you're saying to yourself "Idiot. That stuff's for St. Pattrick's Day." You're right, but when it comes right down to it, all the saints are pretty much the same with their matching halos and...long periods of time since their untimely deaths.

On to other things- obviously, the big event of the weekend was Bountiful's Junior Prom at the SLC Library. The place was packed and bouncing all night long. The picture above illustrates the general enthusiasm for Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Yes, those 80's songs are still ripe with teen emotion. Look at the forlorn faces and arms raised with conviction "Once upon a time I was falling in love...now I'm only falling apart..."

Nobody got stuck in the elevator this year, and we didn't have anyone faint, so I'd say the night was a success. Dizzle posted the playlist below- it kept the floor jammed all night long. What you should have seen was the line of ladies waiting to kiss N8DZ after the dance- holy smokes, was I impressed. The guy not only knows how to work the turntables, but he's equally crafty with the women. I think we're gunna change his name to "CassaDizzleNova." Just the sound of it makes me hungry for a pizza pocket or something.

Special Thanks to: Elisabeth at the Library for making sure we kept a fire lane open, didn't use too much (i.e., any) smoke, and taped down our cords; to Dizzle's CDX for keeping the tunes Bible-belt clean; and Big Daddy Tay Tay for the setup reinforcement and improv scratching on "Yeah." Oh- and it's also worth mentioning that Dizzle didn't even draw blood setting up the lighting truss on Saturday (did on Friday, though)...but I think I created some sort of deep tissue hemorrhage in my hand. I'm gunna have it looked at by a hand hemorrhage professional, or at least pour some root beer over it and see if that helps.

Power to the People

Maybe you read about my experience with Half.com last week. Here's another adventure in online buying and shipping:

I thought it was a little whack that the QSC PLX 3002 we ordered on December 30th hadn't showed by January 14th. So, like the dedicated American I'm trying to be, I gave our good buddy Jeff at Dynamic Audio a call. I left a message, and sent him an email. After a couple days I tried again. A couple days after that, he called me to apologize.

Apparently he was on tour doing sound for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I was like...woah, in Trans-Siberia, huh? Since they probably don't have phones or email all the way over there, and even if they did, I don't know how you're gunna hear them over the din of the orchestra and the patter of the wheels across the train tracks...I forgave him.

Another couple days later, he emailed me to let me know QSC had shipped my amp to one of his job sites in Florida. I was like:

"...So what you're telling me is that Jeb Bush and a bunch of senior citizens are over there driving battery powered golf carts in circles around my amp???"

I didn't know what kind of effect that could have on the equipment, but it just didn't sound safe to me. So, like the dedicated American he's trying to be, Jeff had QSC send me a new one and it finally came around the 25th. Did I mention Jeff is a Texan?

Now...I'm thinking we should share a breif moment of silence. As soon as I get this thing hooked up, it'll be a good long time until we'll hear another. Yup, that's 3000 watts of power to the people...but we'll try to keep it down for you folks over in Florida. It's getting late, and you've got a big day ahead of ya.

"Music Causes Controversy at BHS"

Since we do quite a few of Bountiful High School's dances throughout the year, I though this was an interesting article that ran in The Davis County Clipper in December. I've edited it a little bit so you get the point, but don't have to spend your afternoon reading:

BOUNTIFUL — This past November, following the Halloween Dance, complaints were made to the administration about the content of the music played, along with the videos which accompany the music.
Danny Turnblom, a BHS music teacher, went straight to the top after hearing of the type of music being played at school dances.
“A lot of students came to me and said, ‘I’m uncomfortable.’” said Turnblom. “I wasn’t soliciting, they came to me with their concerns.”
The recent shift of hip-hop towards the mainstream has made it increasingly difficult to avoid such music, as it is becoming the most popular genre of music among teenagers.
“A lot of it is perception,” said Amy Jones, Student Body Officer Advisor. “If you go anywhere with expectations, that’s what you’re going to see.”

The true controversy arose when the alleged music was questioned.
Multiple lyrics were brought to the table for examination, some of them crass, some of them not.

The line, “Come on my homeys,” was one of the controversial lines submitted.

“In context, it was pretty clear to me that it was talking about homosexuals,” said Turnblom. “Some people may say it’s just a group of friends or your buddies, but I believe it was talking about homosexuals.”

According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, the word “homey,” when used as a noun, is defined as “a homeboy or homegirl.”
“If the songs were of a nature as it was originally alleged, then yeah, a school dance isn’t an appropriate setting,” said Ross Harris, a BHS administrator.
Among the alleged songs, most had explicit lyrics or crass context.
“The DJ didn’t even have [the songs] in his collection,” said Jones. “He’s of the predominant religion. He told me he would never play that kind of music because he has a teenage daughter; he would never want her subjected to that.”

After close investigation, the administration concluded the DJ was telling the truth.
“The alleged songs weren’t really even played,” said Harris.

Despite this, all parties felt that a change needed to be made.
“As a parent and teacher, I was concerned,” said Turnblom. “The kids are the ones that complained to me, and they’re aware of the music. As adults we are not, so they know more about the lyrics and what is said. “I think it needed to be done.”
So where is the line drawn? When does a lyric cross the line?
“Anything offends somebody,” said Harris. “I think if you played only Mormon Tabernacle Choir, people would be offended.
“I think it’s water under the bridge. Kids have come to me since and said the music is much better,” said Turnblom. “It’s been solved."

Come on my homeys! That article rocked. I'm aware of at least one letter to the editor that was submitted. It wasn't published, so I thought I'd give it a forum here:

"I am writing in response to the article "Music Causes Controversy at BHS" in the Dec. 21st edition of the Clipper. I couldn't agree more with Mr. Turnblom's stance that songs with lyrics such as "come on my homeys" should not be allowed to be played at school dances. I am even somewhat surprised that you would print such offensive lines in your newspaper. Like Mr. Turnblom says, the line obviously refers to homosexuals...if not homosexuals than possibly homeless people or maybe homely people. I, like Mr. Turnblom, am an adult (just turned 24 last week) and know what words like "homey" mean and I would not appreciate my children being exposed to such offensive garbage. Homosexual, homeless, homely...whatever it means, it doesn't belong in Bountiful."

Well put. Thanks Scott. A quick search of our music database "VisiTrax" showed we don't have whatever song it is that talks about homosexuals, hobos, homless, homley or hobbit people. But if we did have one about hobbits or hobos, I'll probably buy an iPod and listen to that one all day long.

Half.com Gone Wrong

Alright, it looks like this blogging thing might be a bit more than I can ask of Dizzle. So from now on I'm gunna be briefer. More breif. Fuller in my brevity. Anyway...

Have you ever bought something from Half.com? I decided that was the best way to get my text books this year. They're cheaper...way cheaper. I even got one for $0.75. That's like fairy land, right? Well, what seems too good to be true usually is (seriously, I've been all about that this month), and like I mentioned, Half.com went wrong.

I guess it was my fault. But why don't they have some sort of system that checks to make sure you type in the RIGHT address? Yup, all my books went to what turns out as an imaginary address and were returned to the Half.com sellers. That means:

1- I've got to repay for all the shipping costs (which was double the cost of the books in the first place).
2- I've got to wait at least another week for repackaging and shipping,
and 3- I'm gunna be 4 weeks behind in my reading now...come to think of it, we've got midterms before those books are gunna get here.

Moral of the story: I'm not going to take responsibility for my own actions anymore. I'm done with that stuff. From now on, blame will be placed on my choice of:

1- The "man"
2- The "system"
3- Somebody's little brother or my cousin

Thanks to Carrie Anne who's basically letting me use all her books so I won't have an excuse to fall behind...and those Kate Spade glasses are hot.

Woods Cross Jr. Prom

DAVIS CONVENTION CENTER, LAYTON -- Alright, so this dance pretty much rocked. I gotta admit, it started off a little rocky. Dizzle and I went to hook the trailer up to the truck and there were no lights. No lights is bad. No lights is worse when it's dark. No lights is super bad when it's dark and it's foggy. So, we called up Gary, and he followed us all the way up to stave off the po-pos.

The conference center is nicer than...my apartment. Way nicer. It's actually nicer than just about anywhere else we've done a dance, and we've been to some nice places. If you're a high school (which would mean you're an inatimate object and you couldn't actually be reading this...but let's assume that by "high school," I mean someone who plans dances for your high school), I highly recommend the place. Especially if you're Bountiful High. Little America is nice, but the DCC has these cool pillars with lights on them...and it's right by a bunch of cool restaurants, so you can choose what you want to eat. Some people would rather have...fish than chicken. Oh- and that way, the boys could just buy the girls a salad since that's all they seem to eat anyway. Now we're talking economy.

Anyway, the students rocked- gotta give a shout out to Tay-Tay and Jessica, Jamal, and of course KC who hired us, and had some of the best requests for the night. No fire alarms, no injuries, and best of all, no requests for the Boot Scootin' Boogie. I love my life.
